(LEBANON) - The Boone County sheriff’s department says it has recently investigated several attempts in recent weeks of fraudulent persons attempting to have local citizens cash bogus checks from U.S. companies and then mail a part of the proceeds to accounts outside of the country.
According to Sheriff Ken Campbell, these scams advertise in a mailer sent to the person that they've won a sweepstakes and all they need to do is pay the tax amount for the winnings and then pocket the rest of the cash. In many instances, this is several thousand dollars.
The scammers advise to mail the tax amount back to them and then enjoy the cash. The problem occurs when the check is found to be fraudulent by the bank and the victim is left paying the amount back.
Campbell advises citizens to not answer these types of scams and do not call the telephone numbers provided, but rather make a report with your local jurisdiction.
