(MERRILLVILLE) - Federal officials want to talk to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management about plans to dissolve the agency’s enforcement office and other proposed enforcement changes.
Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Bharat Mathu says that his office wants to talk about the changes to determine their impact on federal programs.
Environmental groups contend the changes could weaken protections for the state's air, land and water.
To go into effect, the proposed policy must be available for public inspection for 45 days. The document is available on IDEM's website, but IDEM has not officially put the policy up for public comment.
