(UNDATED) - Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide.
85 women in Indiana died from cervical cancer in 2006. In recognition of National Cervical Health Awareness Month, women are encouraged to take the proper steps for prevention. These include getting yearly check-ups and receiving the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.
HPV is the most common cause of cervical cancer. It is recommended by the Centers For Disease Control and prevention that the HPV vaccine be administered to girls and women between the ages of 9 and 26.
Planned Parenthood of Indiana is taking an active role in trying to prevent new cases of cervical cancer by offering the HPV vaccine at 18 of its 35 health centers.
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
