(EVANSVILLE) - Members of the Indiana National Guard have been called to active duty to assist in the weather-related problems in Evansville and Vanderburgh County.
Staff Sergeant Jeff Lowry says 17 National Guard members will aid in transporting residents to warming centers in Vanderburgh and surrounding counties.
30,000 people are without power in Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Vectren has about 60,000 without power in Southwestern Indiana.
Lowry says the Guard was called to respond in the June floods and the "leftovers" of Hurricane Ike in 2008.
This is the first local weather activation for the National Guard in 2009.
