(STATEHOUSE) - The Senate Health and Provider Services Committee has unanimously passed a bill to establish so-called Silver Alerts for missing adults in Indiana.
The bill's author, Republican Senator Patricia Miller of Indianapolis, says the alerts would be similar to Amber Alerts for children.
Miller claims they could help protect more than 100,000 Indiana residents with Alzheimer's Disease, dementia or other mental issues.
At least ten states have implemented their own missing person notification system for people with some form of mental impairments.
Miller's bill is backed by the AARP and the Alzheimer's Association.
Miller says it would be up to State Police to issue a Silver Alert.
