With Ice And Snow Comes Pothole Season

Last updated on Friday, January 2, 2009

(UNDATED) - After several weeks of road-wrecking ice and snow, we enter the pothole season.

Indiana Department of Transportation crews turn to filling the teeth-jarring street cavities uncovered by the ice melt.

INDOT Spokeswoman Ashley Hungate says it's hard to tell if the problem is worse this winter than years past. Roads are paved during the summer, so they may not have the pothole problems that older streets might.

Hungate says INDOT has not received a significant increase in complaints this winter. She says crews fill the road cavities with a temporary mix of tar and stone. The permanent solution comes in warmer months in the form of hot mix asphalt.

Hungate says motorists can e-mail or call INDOT if they spot or hit a big pothole.
