(INDIANAPOLIS) - There’s no sign of the man who robbed a Chase bank branch in Lawrence Thursday morning, but Police Chief Paul Whitehead says investigators are gathering evidence in the residential neighborhood when escaped pursuit.
A Lawrence officer took up the chase almost immediately as the robber left the bank. The fugitive missed a curve and ran from a stolen van in front a house just a few blocks away. He ran to an apartment complex nearby, but that's the last time he was seen.
He and the officer traded gunshots, with a bullet hitting the officer's patrol car. The officer wasn't hit and apparently neither was the suspect.
Judging by the size of the bullet hole in the officer's passenger side door and shell casings found at the scene, investigators believe the man carried a 45-caliber handgun.
He's described as a black male, wearing a gray sweat suit with a bandana hiding his face.
