(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard’s personal cell phone was stolen while he was in Detroit for the NCAA Final Four tournament last weekend.
Robert Vane with the mayor's office says Ballard and his wife were walking back to their hotel following the second game Saturday evening when he stopped to offer help to a man who appeared to be having a seizure.
Two or three other people approached the mayor and Vane says that's when one of them stole Ballard's cell phone. The man who the mayor was attempting to help fled with the others after the theft. Both Mayor Ballard and Mrs. Ballard were unharmed.
The mayor notified the police and also canceled his cell phone account. Detroit police say the mayor wasn't specifically targeted, but was a random victim of out-of-town pickpockets who were preying upon people attending the games.
Vane says since the mayor wasn't in Detroit in an official capacity, he didn't travel in an Indianapolis city vehicle or take his security detail with him on the trip.
