(UNDATED) - Many people seemed to discover an interest in energy efficiency last year. Environmentalists say that green wave hasn’t entirely gone away.
A year ago, Indiana gas prices stood at $3.48 a gallon, on their way to a record of $4.17. Today's average is less than half that peak price, but Hoosier Environmental Council Executive Director Jesse Kharbanda thinks people may have longer memories than in past price jumps.
He suggests the price spike has accelerated a growing awareness of environmental issues.
Kharbanda notes Indianapolis-based makers of high-powered batteries are still generating interest, and area industries have joined forces to try to lure more green-energy firms to Central Indiana.
And he points to directives from Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard encouraging green buildings, and from Governor Mitch Daniels ordering future state buildings to meet energy-efficiency standards.
Kharbanda says the he hopes for another boost from this year's legislature, in areas from funding for mass transit to mandating greater use of renewable energy.
