(UNDATED) - Traffic fatalities nationwide have fallen to their lowest level since the early 1960s.
The federal government says 37,313 people were killed last year. That's down 9.1% from 2007. Indiana State Police reported earlier that the Hoosier State had 814 fatalities in 2008, down from 898 the year before.
That extends a steady decline over the last few years. Indiana State Police Sergeant Anthony Emery credits an increase in the number of troopers patrolling the roadways, enforcement of the drunken driving laws and increased use of seat belts.
Experts say people drove less last year also because of recession and higher gas prices.
