(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Evansville Courier-Press reports the cost of extending Interstate 69 from Indianapolis to Evansville has soared past $3 billion.
That's according to new Indiana Department of Transportation estimates.
In 2003, state officials said the 142-mile extension would cost $1.77 billion, but now inflation and other costs have pushed the anticipated price to $3.1 billion.
The higher costs have renewed opponents' calls to build the highway along existing routes rather than carving a new route through southwestern Indiana.
