(UNDATED) - Swimming pools are being prepared to open this weekend and with the swimming season comes the responsibility to watch out for children near the water.
It only takes a few seconds and a few inches of water for a child to drown.
The American College of Emergency physicians says for every drowning victim, there are more than 10 others who are treated for incidents of near drowning.
They recommend a few proactive steps to prevent children from drowning.
If you own a pool or hot tub, check the condition of your locks and safety fences around them.
Children between the ages of one and four should be watched constantly near pools of any size.
Also be vigilant for their safety around hot tubs, lakes, beaches or any area involving water.
