(UNDATED) - Changes to the state’s network of air pollution monitors is under review.
Robert Elstro with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management says the mandatory annual review is conducted to ensure the agency monitors for pollutants at the best locations for accurate readings.
The proposed changes were presented at a public hearing in Indianapolis Wednesday evening.
The changes for 2010 call for the addition of seven more air monitors, giving the network at total of 184 locations around the state.
Elstro says IDEM used to contract with several local air monitoring agencies at six locations.
But he says the state agency has now taken over that responsibility, bringing the entire air pollution monitoring network under IDEM's control.
The agency is accepting comments about the proposed changes until June 14th when it will make its final decision.
