(STATEHOUSE) - Democrats have approved a bid to rein in the growth of charter schools without sparking the wrath of the federal government.
Instead of capping charter schools at one per district, House Democrats' latest proposal would require school board approval once charters make up more than 10-percent of a school system's buildings.
Uniondale Republican Jeff Espich says that would essentially give a veto to the Indianapolis public schools.
Indianapolis is the only city in the US where the mayor can issue charters.
Ball State has also issued several charters, enough that the Gary community schools board would also be able to veto any more charters there.
