(MADISON) - Investigators say the cause of the fire that severely damaged the historic Jefferson County courthouse in Madison last month was accidental.
The courthouse was in the finishing stages of an extensive remodeling program.
One of the final stages included repair and replacement of copper downspouts and gutters from the upper parts of the building.
Their report says a contractor was soldering two pieces together on the afternoon of may 20th and accidentally started a fire in the wooden sections of the building's roof.
Local officials say they will rebuild the courthouse.
