(SOUTH BEND) - Drivers will have to put down their cell phones in school crossing zones, if South Bend city leaders get their way.
A new measure that authorizes police to ticket anyone caught texting or talking on a hand-held phone while driving through school zones, during school hours, unanimously passed on first reading.
Members of the South Bend Common Council started researching the measure last fall.
Money collected from the fines would fund police training.
