(UNDATED) - The tough economy is forcing some of the nation’s zoos to lay off employees and relocate their animals.
But most of Indiana's zoos are not facing a similar problem. Both the Indianapolis Zoo and the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo are not dependent on tax-based revenue.
Like Fort Wayne, Indianapolis Zoo spokesperson Karen burns says the zoo's budget is driven by market forces.
But Evansville's Mesker Park Zoo and South Bend's Potowatami Zoo operate on city budgets.
