(EVANSVILLE) - Evansville is working to keep jobs following the announcement that Whirlpool will be closing its manufacturing facility in the city, eliminating 11-hundred workers.
A rapid response team is developing a plan to retain the 300 existing jobs at the product development center in the city, which serves as the North American Center for all refrigeration technology within Whirlpool.
The Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana is taking the lead on crafting a competitive proposal.
Greg Wathen, Coalition President and CEO, says there is a short window of opportunity.
The city and Whirlpool are currently in discussions about the center.
He says the company wants the community's proposal by mid-September with a decision expected at the end of the month.
