Baby's Suffocation Incident Reaches Appeals Court

Last updated on Thursday, August 13, 2009

(INDIANA STATEHOUSE) - A case involving the accidental suffocation death of a three month old baby reaches the Indiana Court of Appeals today.

According to the Indiana Department of Child Services, one baby a week suffocates in Indiana because of unsafe sleeping practices.

Health officials say the deaths are preventable.

Dr. Roberta Hibbard, Professor of Pediatrics at the IU School of Medicine, recommends babies under one year old be placed on their backs on a firm mattress in their own cribs.
