(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Marion County property tax bills aren’t due till November 19th, but homeowners can now get an estimate of what they’ll owe.
The website for the state department of local government finance offers a property tax calculator. You punch in your address, or anyone else's and the assessed value, available elsewhere on the website.
Throw in the type of property and any deductions, and it gives you something close to the exact bill.
The total is still approximate because the state is estimating the amount of its homestead credit, and some counties have an additional homestead credit attached to the county economic development income tax (credit).
There are now 83 counties in the calculator's database.
The DLGF adds counties when it approves their local budgets and tax rates for next year.
Marion County is among the most recent additions.
DLGF spokeswoman Amanda Stanley says Elkhart, Floyd, Posey and St. Joseph counties should be added by midweek, with Porter County expected to follow next month.
Stanley says Lake County is the only county whose residents will receive their actual bills before the estimates are available.
The City of Gary won its appeal to a state board to go above the circuit-breaker caps on property taxes.
That makes it more complicated to program the proper numbers into the calculator.
Clinton and LaPorte counties are too far behind to appear on the calculator any time soon.
