Fire Chief Says Paper Mill Fire Was Accidental

Last updated on Tuesday, December 15, 2009

(CARTHAGE, IN) - The Carthage Fire Chief says the early Sunday morning fire that gutted a former paper mill in Rush County was accidental.

Chief Josh Cooley says workers on Saturday were salvaging metal in the middle of the building in the area where the fire started.

He said they waited an hour after completing their work using a cutting torch before leaving at around 2:00PM, but by 12:30AM Sunday when Cooley says firefighters arrived, 20 to 30 foot flames were seen shooting through the roof in that area.

It took crews from nine fire departments to extinguish the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire.

The mill once housed the Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, but was closed two years ago.
