(MISHAWAKA, IN) - The St. Joseph County Prosecutor says criminal charges are being filed against the man who caused a crash that killed a Mishawaka police officer and his k-9 partner.
Authorities say 31-year-old Shawn Devine was drunk and under the influence of controlled substances when he sideswiped a patrol car being driven by 42-year-old Corporal James Szuba.
Szuba and his 8-year-old k-9 partner, Ricky, were attempting to assist another officer pursuing Devine when the collision occurred.
Devine has been charged with DUI causing death, fleeing a police officer causing death and being a habitual substance offender.
