(UNDATED) - Boaters would do better to leave the cold beer at home, especially this weekend.
Indiana will be participating in a coordinated national weekend of detection and enforcement of boating under the influence.
Increased patrols will be monitoring Indiana waterways looking for the impaired boater.
During last year's operation, Indiana conservation officers made 15 boating while intoxicated arrests, part of the 101 made during the 2009 boating season.
Boaters found to be impaired can expect severe penalties that may include fines, jail time, and loss of boating privileges.
According to the most recent Coast Guard statistics, BUI remains the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, with 17% of boating fatalities a direct result of alcohol or drug use.
