(INDIANAPOLIS) - The holiday shopping season has begun and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department wants shoppers to know the tips to avoid robbery or burglary.
IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson says when shopping, it's best to travel with a friend or in a group. He also says to dress casually and not to wear expensive jewelry. Using a credit card when possible is best but if you have to carry cash, make sure it's a small amount and keep it in a front pocket.
When you finish shopping, Thompson advises to keep all packages in the trunk of your car, away from the view of potential robbers. Also, unload those packages frequently.
Thompson says to be aware of your surroundings in the parking lot. Security cameras can be a deterrent but he says most of the time, those cameras are only used after a crime has been committed.
One safe way to do your shopping is to buy your gifts online from your home to avoid the possibility of theft.
