(COLUMBUS, IN) - The Columbus Planning Commission approved the proposed outdoor sports complex for the city during its recent meeting.
The vote was 8-3. Ed Curtain with the Columbus Redevelopment Commission says they still need to get the proper permits before construction can begin.
He says the permits are needed from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and from the Department of Natural Resources.
Without them, Curtain says he is unable to speculate with the project may be completed, though he is hopeful it will be ready by spring of 2012.
Curtain adds that the Columbus Redevelopment Commission went to great lengths to communicate with city residents and get their thoughts on the proposal.
Specifically, he pointed to a pair of open houses the commission held recently.
He said approximately 100 people showed up to look over plans and to ask questions. Curtain believes all questions were answered satisfactorily.
He added that once the project is complete, "not only downtown, but all of Columbus" would benefit from its construction.
