(CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN) - Prescription drug overdoses are becoming a big problem in Montgomery County.
In 2010, there were 14 deaths from prescription drug overdoses.
There have already been four deaths this year.
In 2009, there were 11 deaths.
Ahead Coalition Outreach Coordinator Tim Bristol says this growing trend is an alarming one.
He says the numbers should be a wake-up call because it is preventable.
Bristol says it is even more alarming when you compare it neighboring Tippecanoe County, which is three times larger than Montgomery County, with a recorded 25 drug overdoses in 2010.
To address the problem, Sheriff Mark Casteel is hosting a drug awareness seminar for everyone in the community tonight.
The goal is to give parents a chance to learn about the drug problems in the county, as well as to provide advice about how to talk to children about drugs, alcohol and other behaviors that could put them at risk.
The community is also planning a medicine take back program on April 30th to allow residents to safely dispose of unused or expired medicines.
