Last updated on Wednesday, April 6, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - An Indianapolis non-profit organization has been awarded a $1million grant to help academically promising low income students.

Starfish Initiative was awarded the John Burkhart Indiana Award For College success from USA funds.

USA Funds CEO Carl Dalstrom says Starfish earned the award with it's track record of supporting student success since 2003, it's success rate in graduation programs and it's successful mentoring model were some of the reasons they received the award.

Starfish Initiative Founder Mike Feeney says they understand the importance and trust in their organization to achieve more success than in the past 7 years.

USA Funds established the award to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

The award is named after John Burkhart, who was co-founder of Indianapolis Business Journal, among many other organizations.

Starfish was selected from 26 applicants.
