Lady Victory Statue Removed From Soldiers And Sailors Monument

Last updated on Monday, April 25, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Lady Victory makes her dissension to the ground.

The rain stopped long enough over the weekend for the 38-foot, nearly 20,000-pound bronze sculpture to be lowered from the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis.

Mary Egenoff watched as her son, a local rigging contractor, helped secure the sculpture prior to being taken to the ground.

She says he was nearly struck by lightning Friday while securing a cage around the winged piece.

Repairs are expected to take about four months, with Lady Victory returning to her perch by late August.

While she's gone, crews will repair the steel supports which hold her in place, and repair cracks and water damage in the monument's limestone eagles.
