(UNDATED) - The United Way wants of Central Indiana hopes to recruit thousands of volunteer tutors, mentors and readers as part of a national campaign to help children across the country who are struggling in school.
Jay Geshay, Senior Vice President Community Planning and Strategic Initiatives of the United Way of Central Indiana, says Hoosier volunteers must be willing to spend an hour per week as a reading tutor.
Currently, 23 schools in Central Indiana utilize united way tutors to read with children who have fallen behind.
About 900 readup tutors are helping this school year in Marion, Hendricks and Hancock counties.
Geshay is hopeful the campaign will increase that number to 1,600.
