(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Dozens of historic checks, including one signed by President Abraham Lincoln two days before his assassination, are on display for the next two weeks inside a downtown Indianapolis bank.
The checks were discovered after Huntington acquired the Union Commerce Bank in 1982.
Steve Haller, Indiana Historical Society, says there are seven founding fathers and 22 presidents or vice presidents represented in the display.
A check written on the suffrage association account is signed by Susan B. Anthony, the only woman included in the gallery.
Checks signed by William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison are also a part of the collection.
Appraised values for collectors range from a high of $25,000 signed by Lincoln to a low of $50 signed by Philosopher John Fisk.
Haller says, for historians and archivists, checks can be used to fill in gaps in missing financial records, especially prior to the 1900s.
