(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The State Director of Agriculture is Optimistic the Indiana corn and soybean yield will be okay despite a rather late planting this year.
Heavy rains and widespread flooding prevented farmers from getting to the fields to plant during the optimal time.
State AG Director Joe Kelsay says as a result Indiana is trending slightly below the nation average. Kelsay says it is also too early to tell.
Kelsay says the dry hot weather has helped the corn that is in the ground.
Corn is more susceptible to the timing of plant than are soybeans.
Kelsay says there have been years past where late planting has had a negative impact and other years where the late plant has had no effect at all.
