(BUNKER HILL) - Grissom Air Reserve Base in Miami County will be a “home away from home” for a fighter wing unit based on the east coast.
Tech Sgt. Doug Hayes says approximately 20 F-22 raptors and support personnel from the 1st Fighter Wing will arrive today from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Hayes says Grissom received a call earlier in the week when it became apparent that Hurricane Irene was going to be a threat to the east coast and plans began to accommodate the aircraft and about 100 support personnel.
Hayes says pilots, maintenance crew and other essential support personnel will accompany the aircraft to simply ride out the storm in Indiana. Hayes says Grissom has been an inland haven for coastal bases for many years and it makes sense to protect these military assets and save taxpayer dollars at the same time.
Hayes says Grissom's accommodations vary depending upon the size of the aircraft, but the base is open to housing whatever aircraft they can when needed.
Grissom Air Reserve Base is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing.
