(MOUNT VERNON) - Mount Vernon High School athletes are the latest victims of budget cuts to public schools - 250-dollars a sport to participate.
Freshmen Ben and Becca say they understand why their parents have to chip in, but its hard. Ben says he wishes the government would "give them more money." Some families are resorting to fundraising to defer the costs.
The Mount Vernon School corporation in Fortville approved a round of cost-cutting measures back in March that includes the two-year closure of Fortville Elementary and giving the high school marching band a year off.
Many other school systems across the state have made similar moves in the wake of falling tax revenues. Mount Vernon returns to school this Monday.
