(INDIANAPOLIS) - Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman is vowing to slash taxes and spending to revive what he says is a sputtering economy.
Huntsman reminded about 150 Indiana Republicans at state GOP headquarters the U.S. once supplied a quarter of the world's manufacturing. Partly due to cheap labor in an industrialized China, that percentage has been cut in half.
The former ambassador to China says costs there are rising, and says the U.S. can reclaim its old position by cutting business taxes he says are the second-highest in the world. And Huntsman says he'd seek to duplicate his success as governor of Utah in creating a flatter tax, probably with just three brackets and few deductions.
Huntsman has languished at the back and the left of the pack, getting labeled as less conservative than his rivals. He challenged his Indianapolis audience to look at his record as governor, and says he's counting on the one-on-one campaigning of New Hampshire to boost him to the nomination.
Huntsman is the second presidential candidate to visit Indianapolis this month, part of a state party initiative to lure all 10 GOP hopefuls to the state. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will make a stop in Indianapolis in September.
