(INDIANAPOLIS) - Thousands of students have not begun classes at Indianapolis public schools, even though school started on Monday.
IPS Spokesperson Mary Louise Bewley says 6,000 students were not in class the first day, but that number dropped approximately 2,000 by Tuesday. She says the numbers are typical for the school system.
They expect an influx of students on Monday since they are having a special registration event on Saturday. Bewley says social workers at each school are knocking on doors and making phone calls trying to get students in class.
The Indiana Department of Education will collect attendance numbers from all school districts on September 16th.
