(INDIANAPOLIS) - The attorney for one of the men charged in the shooting of an Indy Metro police officer says his client is innocent.
Johnny Taboada-Perez is charged with assisting a criminal. Police accuse him of being at the wheel while a second man fired from a moving car at Officer Dustin Carmack last Friday. Attorney David Hennessy says that's not true, and suggests another vehicle may have been involved.
Taboada was arrested after police stopped a Honda believed to be the same one identified by witnesses at the scene. At least two other vehicles are known to be caught up in the incident.
Along with attempted murder, Eugenio Gonzalez, 18, is charged with carjacking a KIA after fleeing the Honda. Gonzalez was finally arrested in a Dodge Caravan.
Gonzalez faces 20-to-121 years if convicted on those charges and a weapons count. Taboada-Perez is charged with marijuana possession along with the assisting charge, and could receive up to 17 years.
A judge has scheduled both men's trial for Halloween.
