(HARMONY) - A Clay County teen died Sunday after accidentally shooting himself, police say.
Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton told WTWO-TV in Terre Haute the 16-year-old boy was pulling the slide of a handgun back and forth, then "dry fired" it, meaning there was no magazine in the weapon. The child then put a magazine in the weapon, put the gun to his head and it went off.
The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The Brazil Times reported the shooting took place at a home in Harmony.
Witnesses told police the teen gave no indication of wanting to harm himself, leading police to believe the shooting was accidental.
The television station reports the boy was a member of the football team at Northview High School in Brazil, but his identity is not being released pending notification of family members.
