(INDIANAPOLIS) - Former Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith spent two days in jail in Washington D.C. jail.
The New York Post reports he was arrested for domestic violence on July 30th after his wife called police to their Georgetown home.
Both Stephen and his wife Margaret now say there was no domestic violence. She says the police report states otherwise and she immediate took action to set the record straight. Margaret Goldsmith says no charges were filed and no one was injured.
The New York Post quotes a police report as saying Goldsmith shoved his wife Margaret into a kitchen counter during a shouting match, then grabbed her when she tried to call the police.
Steve and Margaret Goldsmith issued statements denying the specifics of the report.
Goldsmith says he resigned as New York's deputy mayor to avoid being a distraction for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Law Requires Police To Make Arrest
Kerry Blomquist with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence says the district and 22 states have laws requiring police to make an arrest on any domestic violence call if officers believe they have probable cause.
Blomquist says mandatory-arrest laws became popular about 25 years ago, after a Minneapolis study found such laws reduce the frequency with which victims recant their story.
