(FRANKLIN) - The Franklin City Council is expected to hear two ordinances that would address a request from the city’s mayor for an ordinance allowing golf carts on city streets.
Indiana law forbids the practice unless a city or town establishes an ordinance for regulation.
A disabled citizen was recently ticket for driving a golf cart on a city street, resurrecting the issue that was defeated by the council in 2009.
City Councilman and law enforcement officer Joe Ault believes the practice is dangerous and fears death or injury for citizens, especially children who might be hit by cars and other vehicles in the roads. His ordinance would allow golf carts in private neighborhoods and on the Franklin College campus where the carts are used by security personnel. However his version would restrict most areas and major thoroughfares.
A second ordinance has been drafted by other council members easing the restrictions to allow more flexibility in travel for those with disabilities.
Although Ault says he can only speak for himself, he believes the council is evenly split on its support of any ordinance on the issue.
The council will hear both proposals when it convenes again on September 19th.
