(INDIANAPOLIS) - There is a new way to pay for parking is debuting in Indiana… and there’s an app for that!
Parkmobile.com is unveiling its new pay by smartphone system. It kicks off in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis Tuesday. It'll spread to all 3,600 pay parking spaces in Indianapolis over the next several months.
Park Mobile Vice President Mike Sanocki and Park Indy Manager Adam Isen unveiled the new app Thursday.
The system requires users to download the free app to their smartphone and register their drivers license, credit card and telephone number. After parking, they pull up the app and pay for parking using the big code on the front of parking meters and pay boxes.
Sanocki says there's a 25-cent surcharge per transaction. That's how the company makes money.
Sanocki says Park Mobile got its start in the Netherlands where 80-percent of motorists pay by phone.
The firm just finished outfitting the entire District of Columbia and is also in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Boston, Santa Cruz and Newport Beach.
