(EAST CHICAGO) - An East Chicago school bus aide is on suspension today, after a handgun allegedly tumbled out of his waistband at the feet of elementary students on their way to class Thursday morning.
Parents who witnessed the incident say the small-caliber semiautomatic handgun did not go off, and the aide scooped it up after the students got on the bus and the driver drove away.
Authorities say the aide is a lawful gun owner with a valid license to carry a handgun. But East Chicago schools policy prohibits staff from carrying a firearm in any school setting.
