(AUGUSTA, ME)(NBC) - An autopsy is being done on the body of a woman that was found in a freezer at an Augusta, Maine storage unit on Friday.
Police believe it could be Kitty Wardwell, who went missing in 1983.
She was the girlfriend of the storage unit's late renter, Frank Julian.
Julian's family discovered the body when they were cleaning out the locker after his death. He died at the age of 80.
Police say his family has been very cooperative and it appears that none of them knew anything about the body.
Police are waiting on the medical examiner's office to make a positive identification on the body, but they are working on the assumption that it is Kitty Wardwell.
Frank Julian has always been a person of interest in her case, but police say they never had enough evidence to do a search.
He was the last person to see her alive, and initially told police that he and Wardwell had gotten into an argument in Salem, New Hampshire. He told police he had left her at a motel there and went home to Maine.
Wardwell's sister, Linda Currier, declined to comment on the case until she knows for sure whether this body is her sister. Though she did say it has been a long, frustrationg 28 years and their mother died without knowing who killed her daughter.
