(BLOOMINGTON)(AP) - Indiana University will celebrate the life of late President John Ryan during a service next week on its main campus in Bloomington. The public is invited to the Oct. 28 event at the Indiana Memorial Union. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with a concert featuring music by Hoagy Carmichael. 2-time Grammy Award-winner Sylvia McNair also will perform.

Ryan was IU's president from 1971 to 1987. During his tenure, he oversaw the establishment of regional IU campuses in Richmond and New Albany and the founding of several new schools and cultural centers on the Bloomington campus.
Ryan died on Aug. 6 at the age of 81.
