(WEST LAFAYETTE) (AP) - Purdue University scientists and students are helping install seismometers across Indiana as part of a national earthquake monitoring project.
In the coming months, 23 Indiana sites are expected to be fitted with seismic, GPS and other geophysical instruments that will be operational by late next spring. The effort is part of a National Science Foundation program that includes more than 400 portable seismometers.
Indiana is among the strip of states from Michigan to Florida where installations of the EarthScope equipment began this fall. The data will help measure earthquakes, track shifts in the Earth's surface and create images of North America's crust and mantle.
Purdue geophysicist Robert Nowack says the data could shed light on the New Madrid and Wabash Valley fault zones.
