(UNDATED) - A new product is turning up in some gas stations around the state: brownies marketed as relaxation aids.
The brownies, which are sold under names like "Lazy Larry" include a chemical called melatonin which some believe may help induce sleep.
The chemical is also sold in over-the-counter supplements, but it has not been approved by federal regulators for use as medicine and is not controlled by the FDA.
The FDA has, however, issued statements on products like Lazy Larry cakes, expressing concern that the products are "marketed alongside food snacks."
For their part, the brownies' makers add disclaimers to their labels, including: "For adults only: not suitable for children," "dietary supplement," and "warning: may cause drowsiness."
But the FDA is concerned people will not realize what they are purchasing and children could eat the brownies or adults who are driving or operating machinery.
