(COLUMBUS) - A family of three escaped a house fire in East Columbus early this morning after a smoke detector woke the family.
The fire at 31 S. Hinman St., the home of Camden and Lauren Cox and their young daughter, Jadynn, caused an estimated $50,000 in damage, said Matt Noblitt, spokesman for Columbus Fire Department.
Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at 3 a.m. after a smoke detector alerted Cox and he woke his family who were asleep on the first floor of the home, Noblitt said.
The fire produced heavy smoke on the second floor of the home, but the Cox family escaped. The fire department's ladder truck was used to reach the roof and cut a ventilation hole to reduce the smoke and heat in the second floor.
Firefighters had the fire put out within 30 minutes but remained at the scene past 6 a.m.
Investigators could not determine the cause of the fire.
