(UNDATED) - A reminder to homeowners as they turn up their heaters and unpack their winter coats, don’t forget about your furry friends who are stuck outside to bare the cold.
Without the assistance of their owner, many four-legged friends would not survive the winter temperatures.
But with a few essentials some dogs with thick coats can with-stand the bitter temperatures. For starters a warm bed of straw can usually do the trick but outdoor dogs require much more.
Pets need plenty of fresh water and plenty of food. Dogs that are outside all the time need the digestion of the food to keep their bodies warm. Water bowls left outside can freeze within minutes. Heated bowls can be purchased at most local pet stores.
But if man's best friend isn't accustom to outdoor living, just a simple trip outside could do some damage. Dogs left outside for more than twenty minutes can run the risk of frost bitten paws or worse, end up frozen to the ground.
A good rule of thumb; if it's too cold for you it's too cold for your pet.
