(BRAZIL) - A 21-month old child is dead and so is his caretaker. Police are trying to piece together the two bizarre incidents.
Terre Haute police were called to a home on South 17th Street just before 8 p.m. Sunday because a baby was not responding. The mother told police she had left her son with her boyfriend 26-year-old Benjamin Chiddister, but there was no sign of him or his car.
A dispatcher informed police that Chiddisters was killed in a single car accident that same night at 6:45 p.m. on Miami Gardens Road in Brazil.
The child died of blunt force trauma to the head. Police said Chiddister left behind a note to the mother saying he was sorry for what happened, but didn't elaborate as to how the boy was injured.
According to police, Chiddisters was driving too fast around a corner in the 9600 block of North Miami Gardens Road, drove into a driveway of a home, hit a stone wall, causing his car to flip into the garage. He died at the scene from head and chest injuries. The Vigo County Coroner has ruled his death a suicide. There was no alcohol in his system, according to the coroner.
