(DENNISON, Ill.)(WTHI) - Police have confirmed that two adults are dead and three children injured as a result of a train accident that happened in rural Clark County, Ill., late Wednesday afternoon.
Amber Smith, 23, Terre Haute, who was driving the car involved, and Rodney Mayer, 23, Martinsville, Illinois, in the passenger seat, were both killed.
Korbin Moore, 4, Emilee Lenges, 2, and Breanna Lenges, 1, all from Terre Haute, were taken to Union Hospital and then transferred to Indianapolis. Thursday, two were in critical condition, and the other was said to be in fair condition.
The car was crossing the tracks near Fern Lake Road heading southbound when it was struck by the eastbound train on the passenger's side. It was unclear why the car crossed into the train's path.
CSX said none of the train's crew members were hurt. The freight train was en route to St. Louis.
Speaking off-camera, neighbors told 24-Hour News 8 news partner WTHI-TV they often thought the crossing was dangerous since the view of cars approaching the crossing is obstructed by the crest of a hill to the East and trees to the West.
They also note that there are no flashing signals to indicate the presence of approaching trains.
