(INDIANAPOLIS)(WAVE6) - A push to move Indiana to the Central Time Zone has stalled at the Statehouse.
The House Transportation Committee on Wednesday discussed a resolution that would urge the United States Department of Transportation to hold hearings on switching the state's time zone.
Members of the Central Time Coalition argued in favor of the move, citing several disadvantages to most of the state being in the Eastern Time Zone, including morning darkness, which they claim puts Indiana school children in danger.
Center time advocates also argued the switch would help businesses that deal with Chicago and the West Coast.
But the Indiana Chamber of Commerce said the current system is the way to go.
"We have several regional economies based on our geography. Folks in the western part of the state would be pleased. Folks in the eastern, central parts of the state would not be pleased," said Vice President Cameron Carter. "We have polled our members. The business community is behind the status quo."
Parts of Indiana, in the Chicago area and in the Evansville area, are on Central Time. Indiana began observing Daylight-Saving Time in 2005.
Lawmakers decided not to vote on the resolution, effectively killing the issue until next year.
